The Readiness Gap

Principal Consultant, FID Readiness and Delivery Assurance

Most hydrogen projects that stall before a final investment decision do not fail on the engineering. They fail on readiness. I help developers, investors and lenders see where a project really stands before capital is committed.

The practice

The Readiness Gap is my independent practice. It works on one question: is this project ready for the decision in front of it?

The gaps are rarely hidden. Offtake still at heads of terms, permitting behind the programme, a safety case that has not caught up with the design, an execution plan nobody has tested. They show early if the right questions are asked in the right order, and they are far cheaper to close before the investment decision than after it.

I have no OEM, EPC or developer affiliation, so the view you get is independent.

The FID Readiness Review

A fixed-fee review of whether a project is ready for its next investment gate.

Who it is for
Developers preparing for a stage gate or a funding round, and investors or lenders who want an independent view before they commit.
What I look at
The project's evidence across engineering, safety, commercial, regulatory and economic areas, tested against the gate the project is aiming for.
What the board receives
A written board summary of two to four pages: where the case is strong, where it is thin, what is holding the decision back and what would move it.
How long it takes
Agreed at the start, depending on the project's stage and the volume of evidence.
How the fee works
A fixed fee, set by the project's stage and the agreed scope, and confirmed in writing before any work starts.
How to start
Email me with the project's stage and the decision you are preparing for, and we will arrange a short call.

About

I am a Chartered Engineer with more than fifteen years in safety-critical energy infrastructure, the last four of them in green hydrogen. My background is functional safety and industrial control systems, most recently as Head of Engineering at a UK green hydrogen developer.

My qualifications are CEng, CFSE, ChCSP, CMgr and PMP, with an MPhil (Cambridge) in Engineering for Sustainable Development. I have also undertaken executive and strategic leadership studies at Harvard Business School, and I assess and mentor engineers working towards professional registration.
